Remembering January 12

Today, we remember January 12, 2010. A day of lives lost or changed forever as a result of the earthquake.

We pray for God’s hope, love and peace to grow and flourish in the beautiful country of Haiti.

Peace

At this time of the year, we hear much about Peace on Earth.  Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”  John 14:27 (NIV)

As Christians, we hope for this and look for this, but in these days of a world of conflict, strife and violence, particularly in Haiti, it is often difficult to find.

However, as I look at this lovely photo of a mother and her newborn baby, I see: Contentment, Peace, Joy, Love and Hope!

Thank you for helping make the Markee Maternity Center a reality in 2023! This gives joy and hope to all the mothers and babies who receive care in this place.

Wishing you a New Year of peace, hope, joy, contentment and love.

Wonderous Works

Remember the wondrous works that He has done . . .  1 Chronicles 16:12a

In the forty years I have been going to Haiti, I have never seen a more difficult and dangerous time there.

And yet, in the small village of Terre Blanche where HFH works, the Clinic of Hope is seeing patients 24/7.  And the children in the school there are fed daily, even while other schools in the area are not even open.

There is the threat of danger only one mile from the edge of this small village, but wondrous works continue.

How can we understand these wondrous works? Only by falling down and worshiping our Lord.

During this season of wonder – remember the wondrous works God has done and continues to do.

Merry Christmas!

School Book Distribution

What would school be without books?

In Terre Blanche, the students recently received their new school books for this year. According to Pastor Delamy, it was not easy to find all of the books at one time because of the difficult conditions in Haiti. We praise God for this wonderful provision of books.

This school year, there are 780 students registered. Thank you to all HFH donors for your generous and faithful support that helps provide an education for the children in this community – they are Haiti’s future.

If you would like to help, a $50 donation buys books for 10 students.

Education Means Something

Having enough food to provide energy for the day and having enough fuel to transport teachers and some faraway students to school: these are the biggest problems facing school children in Terre Blanche.

Yet, over 800 students make it to school daily, dressed in clean uniforms, eager to learn from committed teachers, and thankful for a hearty midday meal that may be unavailable at home. A light breakfast is also provided for the pre-kindergarten students to give them an added boost to start their day.

Despite the many challenges of life in Haiti, students and parents are thankful for the opportunity to learn and create a better future for themselves and their community.

We thank God for our dedicated teachers and staff that make this a reality.  Our school attracts qualified instructors and is recognized by the Haitian Department of Education for the excellent education our staff provides.

In these days of food insecurity for those in Haiti, school lunches are very important. Parents often send their children to school as much for the food as for the education. We are thankful for those who donate to provide nutritious meals for these children. Just $25 will buy enough rice and beans to feed 100 students.

by Susan Paynter, R.N., HFH board member

Traditional rice and beans are provided for the midday meal; for many, this is their only meal of the day.

Students, pre-kindergarten through high school, line up in their class rows, sing the national anthem, and join in prayer before starting their studies.

Providing Continuing Medical Education

Dr. Marck-Edwidge Jadotte is the assistant medical director at the Clinic of Hope. He has worked to bring Continuing Medical Education topics to the staff and others at the Clinic of Hope and in the Terre Blanche area.

Earlier this year, Dr. Jadotte presented on the topic of Violence Against Women in Haiti. This is the first time that I have heard this topic discussed in a medical presentation in Haiti.

Dr. Jadotte will sometimes bring out-of-area colleagues with him for presentations.

His presentations have included one to high school students on First Aid Care. Dr. Jadotte, also, shared a presentation on Diabetes and Hypertension in an effort to make an impact on these two diseases in the area.

On September 22, a training session on the Management of the Cholera Epidemic was offered at the Clinic of Hope by Dr. Jadotte. The objective was to strengthen the capacity of providers and community health volunteers to adequately manage cholera cases. Cholera has been a major health issue in Haiti since 2011 and, given the seriousness of this infectious disease, this topic was also discussed earlier this year. Along with Dr. Jadotte, Dr. Montumaire and Community Health Volunteers have also made many home visits to remote villages to share information on cholera prevention.

Dr. Jadotte with Cholera Management Presentation

Dr. Jadotte has been working at the Clinic of Hope for several years. He and his family live about 100 miles from Terre Blanche. For work, he stays in Terre Blanche and returns home about twice a month. His willingness to travel the long, difficult and dangerous roads in order to work at the Clinic of Hope is appreciated by all.

HFH is very thankful for Dr. Jadotte. He is a valued staff member at the Clinic of Hope, who encourages others and brings a heart for the health of Haitian people. His Continuing Medical Education topics for clinic staff and others are making a difference. Mesi anpil, Dr. Jadotte!

Vaccination Program

A Wednesday morning vaccination clinic. Madam Cilia (pictured far left) and Madam Ulysse are in charge of the vaccination program.

Dr. Marck-Edwidge Jadotte, assistant medical director at the Clinic of Hope, recently shared this information about vaccines and the Clinic of Hope.

“Vaccines are one of the most important advances in global health and development. For the past few years, the Clinic of Hope in Terre Blanche has safely provided vaccines that reduce the catastrophic effects of diseases such as polio, measles and smallpox, and help children grow up healthy and happy. Thanks to the vaccination initiatives of the Ministry of Public Health and Population, children can walk, play, dance and learn. Vaccinated children do better in school, generating economic benefits that impact their communities.

Vaccination is one of the most effective interventions and services at the Clinic of Hope. Every Wednesday and Thursday, more than ten children are brought by their parents to receive vaccines based on their age and other criteria. Madam Cilia and Madam Ulysse are the two auxiliary nurses assigned to the vaccination program.

We contribute to the well-being of the community by ensuring that every child is vaccinated.”

HFH is thankful for Dr. Jadotte, Madam Ulysse and Madam Cilia who carry out the vaccination program with care and dedication, and make a difference in this community.

Summer School Activities

Pastor Delamy is a man who never wants to waste opportunities with children. Summer school activities in Terre Blanche keep children engaged in learning and include a healthy lunch.

Vacation Bible School in the summer is a tradition in many churches here in the USA, as well as in Haiti.  Besides offering a VBS, summer school provides classes in cooking, sewing, computers and music.

Preparations are underway for the 2023-2024 school year which is scheduled to start the second week of September. Pray with us that the school staff and students have a safe, successful and uninterrupted school year.
