In the mid-1970s, while in junior high, I wrote a report on Haiti. The only thing I remember about the report is that Haiti was the poorest nation in the western hemisphere — and that is still true.
Today, most Haitians around Terre Blanche live in simple housing. Work, when available, might change from one day to the next depending on what is available. And food, as we have shared many times, is sometimes a luxury.
Yet what I have experienced on each trip to Haiti is that Haitians have pride. They work hard. They always dress in their finest when going out in public. Their one desire is to make life better for the next generation.
Isn’t that what we all want?
