Raising Hope: We’re Back

And we’re back!

At one time or another each board member has traveled to Haiti, but we had never all gone at the same time. That changed in October 2013. We went together.

Seven current and past members of our board traveled by land and air to northern Haiti. We met with community health workers. We listened to mothers. We prayed with pastors. We played with children. We walked the fields with farmers. For what purpose?  To see and understand.

Since 2005, Haiti Foundation of Hope’s all-volunteer Board of Directors has worked to bring funding, technical support and administrative oversight to community leaders of Terre Blanche, Haiti.

Working side-by-side, we have established sustainable programs to address the causes of poverty in the region. Through our elementary and secondary schools, medical clinic, school lunch program, women’s trade school, community health program and micro-loans we have seen lives changed.

We each financed our own travel and before we left we invited our friends and family to consider supporting the programs we would visit.  We identified HFH programs close to our hearts and set goals.

Thank you to those who gave so generously to support the chosen programs. Your donations will allow HFH to continue to Raise Hope in the communities we serve. $20,010 was given towards our goal of $27,500. Thank you again for making a difference and raising hope.

Raising Hope: Celebrate

A report from our Raising Hope campaign:

What a great team to Haiti! My prayer had been that God would give us eyes and ears to see, hear and understand the work in Terre Blanche and surrounding communities. That prayer was answered. We have much to celebrate and process as the Haiti Foundation of Hope board looks to the future.

A big thank you to those who gave generously to support the work that touches my heart: primary and secondary schools and the school lunch program.

School lunches are important. For many of the 950 students (pre-K to grade 12) this may be the only meal for the day. Each child gets a generous serving of rice and beans with sauce on top. This little girl’s empty plate says it all.

This group of pre-kindergarten kids is off to class. No one will get lost using this method.

Several wells were successfully drilled in early August. This has been a blessing in an area that continually struggles with drought and clean water sources. These wells also are vital to the community health program which is making a significant difference in the lives of people. This well in the church yard provides clean water for all who come.

Reasons to Give

Written by Steve Bressler, HFH board member:

I considered calling this article “Good News and Bad News for Giving.” The good news is that there have been no recent disasters affecting Haiti. But that means Haiti is off the radar, out of our thoughts and giving goes way down.

Yet the work continues in Terre Blanche at the medical clinic, the schools, the school lunch program and other activities.

I recently joined the Haiti Foundation of Hope board to assist in technical services (which includes lights, water, trucks, solar power, appropriate technology and more). Three things impressed and amazed me about HFH from the very beginning:

So when you give to HFH, over 99 percent of your donation goes directly to the work being done in Terre Blanche in God’s name. Your donation can make a difference today. It provides food, medicine, job training and education. Your donation can also make a difference in the future.

What does God have in store for those living in Terre Blanche? Because of your gift, students who receive a school lunch today may grow up to be pastors. Because of your donation to the school, students and teachers, you may be shaping the minds and hearts of Haiti’s future leaders. Because of your financial involvement, a community health worker may help save the life of a child who may grow up to be a doctor.

My encouragement to you is to join in and make a difference today and into the future.

    Donate online today.

    Recent Photos

Some recent photos from Terre Blanche:

Kids participate in a vacation Bible school drama of Jesus’ disciples fishing. The VBS was held during the summer and led by Haitians and Americans. About 400 kids attended each day.

A graduate of the women’s trade school rides home with her new treadle sewing machine and another woman smiles for a picture. After recently passing a national exam, 15 women graduated from the three-year trade school in Terre Blanche. The school offers an opportunity for women to learn skills such as sewing, cooking, childhood development, nutrition, health and etiquette.

    June 2011 Newsletter

    June Newsletter

Earlier this year, Haiti Foundation of Hope sponsored the first medical conference held at the Clinic of Hope and it was a huge success. There were about 40 participants, mostly young nurses and doctors (some are pictured here). The speaker was an obstetrician/gynecologist from the United States. Everyone who completed the one-day training received a certificate.

    Linda Markee Receives Award

Congratulations to Linda Markee or “Mom Linda” as she is affectionately called by Haitian and American team members. Linda, a founding board member of Haiti Foundation of Hope and the board secretary, was recently awarded the 2011 Humanitarian Award from the Duke University School of Nursing. Linda graduated from the school with a bachelor of science in nursing in 1963.

“Linda’s organizational and leadership skills, her compassion for the Haitian people, and her unwavering service to them exemplify Duke University School of Nursing’s commitment to eliminate health disparities,” Dean Catherine L. Gilliss said in a statement announcing the award.

In 1993 Linda took her first trip to Haiti as a medical aide and team photographer with Haiti Medical Teams, a short-term medical group from Yakima, Washington. She took similar trips the following three years and in 1997 moved with her husband, Dr. Joe Markee, to Leogane, Haiti, to work as a Presbyterian missionary. After returning to the United States in 1999, they led five short-term medical teams to Terre Blanche in remote northern Haiti. In 2005 they founded Haiti Foundation of Hope. Today, Linda continues to be a vital part of the day-to-day operations of Haiti Foundation of Hope and the Markees lead several medical teams to Haiti each year.

“Sometimes in the later years of life, one can find there are many useful skills that God uses to fulfill his work on earth. I believe this to be true for me,” Linda said. “When we started the foundation I had no idea what this would mean in my lifestyle, or the work involved, nor did I dream the delight and satisfaction it would bring to my life and to the lives of so many Haitians.”
