Exciting News: School Construction

We have exciting news to share!

Thanks to a generous donor, funds have been provided to complete the secondary school in Terre Blanche. Construction has begun and is expected to be finished this September. The project will complete the first floor and add a second floor with seven classrooms.

You can help: An additional $9,500 is needed to furnish the completed classrooms with desks, benches and chalkboards. We have already received $6,275. Contributions can be made to the Lunel Paulin Memorial Fund in memory of the school’s principal who died this year.

Donations can be made online.

You can also send donations by mail to PO Box 61941, Vancouver, WA 98666.

Remembering Lunel Paulin and His Dreams for the School

We are saddened to share with you about the passing of Lunel Paulin, the principal at the school in Terre Blanche. He died unexpectedly from a health problem at the end of February.

Lunel was a gentle man who loved to laugh, encourage and spoil the people around him. He was a friend to many of the children at the school, where the flag has been lowered in his honor.

He is survived by his wife and children, and many other family and friends.

One of Lunel’s dreams for the school was to see the secondary school building completed. It has been under construction since 2007.

We are pleased to announce that plans are now in place for the school building to be completed by October of this year. We will have more details in the coming months. The community of Terre Blanche hopes to name the school after Lunel.

Gifts in memory of Lunel to benefit the school can be made online.

Raising Hope: School Books

It costs about $4,000 each year to ensure students at the school in Terre Blanche have the textbooks they need. This is a cost that is beyond the resources of the students’ families. It’s through the generosity of supporters like you that these kids have the basic tools for learning.

School Library

Having a library at the school in Terre Blanche has been a dream for the principal, teachers and students. This year, that dream is becoming a reality. While a number of books had been collected and a small room set aside, there was no shelving to display any of the books or allow for any sort of organization. This fall, a new book shelf was finally built and installed. Now the challenge is to fill the shelves with more books.

The needs at the school in Terre Blanche are great. Please consider giving a one-time or monthly donation to help children as they learn and grow. You can donate online.

Dreams Taking Root

Abel has a noticeable presence about him. At 6-foot-2, it’s not just a physical presence, but an intensity and eagerness that comes through in his personality. He is the third- oldest in a family of eight children.

Abel was 16 years old when he started school in Terre Blanche. He completed primary school in his hometown but there was no high school so he entered 7th grade in Terre Blanche.

Now in the 12th grade, Abel walks an hour and half to get to school. He walks in the mornings on an empty stomach because there is never enough food at his home for breakfast. Food at his home is usually not available for dinners or on weekends either, which makes the school lunches an important part of the school day. Abel says the lunches of rice, beans and sauce are very important to him and taste good.

Math, English and physics top his list of favorite subjects. Abel says the teachers in Terre Blanche are good and explain the lessons well, making it easy for him to learn.

Abel has a dream of using the English he has learned in class to be a translator as he has observed translators work with medical teams at the Clinic of Hope. This past summer, a youth team from the Northwest traveled to work with the youth in Terre Blanche.

Abel was in one of the English classes and when it became clear that another translator was needed, Abel stepped forward to fill in the gap. The Northwest youth pastor said he was impressed with Abel’s leadership and servant’s heart during the four days they worked together. At the end of the week Abel was surprised by a monetary gift – wages for translating. A dream is taking root.

Principal Lunel described Abel as gentle, polite, and someone who likes school, studies hard and is very smart. M. Lunel sees great potential in this young man and said, “Maybe he will take my place one day.” Another dream…

There are almost 1,000 students with similar stories, dreams and hopes at the school in Terre Blanche. Please consider supporting one of these students on a monthly basis. $15 each month supports a primary student and $25 per month supports a secondary student. You can donate online.

Summer School and Lunches

From the June 2013 newsletter:

Summer equals no school here in the United States and the same is true in Haiti. The 1,000 students at the Terre Blanche primary and secondary schools will finish school at the end of June.

An important part of the school day is the school lunch, which for many students is their only meal of the day. During the summer months the lunch program continues, feeding 750 to 800 children who participate in the summer school program. These summer enrichment classes include arts and crafts, sewing for girls and boys and health education provided by the Clinic of Hope staff. The school principal calls this a big program for the children.

Additional highlights for this summer are the two youth teams from the Northwest that will visit. These Americans will bring friendship and hearts to be involved with teenagers in Terre Blanche. The school lunches will help fuel the boys and girls soccer teams in the afternoons.

Your support of HFH makes this summer school program possible. You can feed 100 children for one summer day with a $25 donation or feed more children with $50 or more. You can donate online and designate the gift to “beans and rice.” Thank you for giving hope and nutrition to the children of Haiti.

Education Challenges in Haiti

Read “A New Story of Hope for Nana” to learn how Haiti Foundation of Hope is making a difference in educating young people in Terre Blanche.

Haiti’s education system is ranked third from the bottom of the worst in the world, according to a 2010 Global Education Report. The two countries below Haiti were Eritrea and Somalia (bottom). One of the summary declarations of the report was that “education is development. It creates choices and opportunities for people, reduces the twin burdens of poverty and diseases…”

The parents of children in Haiti recognize this fact without being told by a report, and will sacrifice all to get even one of their children into school. Even with that motivation, there are not enough schools, especially in the countryside. And they are very limited in how many grades are offered. Most high schools are in the cities, requiring the child to live away from parents and adding extra expense.

Both private and public schools require fees – often the public schools are the most competitive and costly. Lack of supplies, inconsistent quality of education, undependable teachers, frequently interrupted school schedule due to events like political unrest or natural disaster … these are only a few of the overwhelming difficulties facing a student attempting to get an education in Haiti.

There are many reasons behind this desperate situation but despite the odds parents continue to sacrifice because they have hope in the possibilities that education brings. Schooling is a sacrifice parents are willing to make.

Terre Blanche is an exception to this abysmal reality of Haitian education. Parents are able to send their children to school beginning in pre-school. When the students are ready for high school they may stay in their community and enjoy the support and love of their family. Although many families in Terre Blanche are unable to pay the school fees, provision has been made to help them. This community has been uniquely blessed.

A New Story of Hope for Nana

A teenage girl named Nana watched the construction activity below from her family’s modest Haitian home that summer of 2007. The latest addition to the cluster of buildings below was a high school! A high school? Impoverished rural communities don’t have high schools.

A faint feeling of hope was rising in her after many disappointments and setbacks in her education. At 21 she was among the 74 percent of female students in Haiti who drop out after primary school, often bringing early pregnancy and a bleak future.

Nana could not imagine finishing school but the scene below offered the only hope, though difficult and expensive. She prayed to God that it would be possible. What a glorious day when she was told she would get a scholarship and could start school again!

Nana started school as an 8-year-old at the Terre Blanche primary school, finishing sixth grade with financial help. But a higher education proved more difficult. She had to move to the city of Gonaives, not the best place for a young girl.

Living apart from family, a series of two devastating floods, emotional trauma from the floods, lessening income from the family garden, and failing the national exam to enter the next grade brought her home prematurely. Continual headaches, flashbacks and memory problems made it hard for her to study and pass that important exam so she resigned herself to life back at Terre Blanche.

Until the high school was built!

Nana loves learning — math, biology and Haitian history are her favorites. She is now 23. After two years of high school at Terre Blanche she is preparing to take the national exam in July so she can continue on.

She is worried she will fail again because of her memory problems that have persisted since the floods. But she considers how God saved her life during the floods, protected her family from cholera and provided food for her family when there was none.

Her face shines when she tells of encouraging people in their faith and learning more about God and spiritual things. She dreams of someday being a nurse.

Nana’s story is part of God’s ongoing stories of hope in Terre Blanche.

Feeding Kids All Year

(June 2011 Newsletter) The school year is coming to an end but for children at the school in Terre Blanche, Haiti, activities will continue into the summer. One of these important activities is lunch. For many of the students, the school lunch is their only meal of the day.

Thank you to our supporters who have generously donated to our school and lunch program over the years.

Before 1995, there were no educational opportunities in Terre Blanche and now there are young people who have dreams of becoming doctors, lawyers and nurses, all contributing members of society. In a place where once the only work available was subsistence farming, it’s exciting to see children with such great dreams.

Letters to Haiti

A group of students from a high school in Gresham, Ore., is getting involved with Haiti. They have been exchanging letters with students in Terre Blanche, which has been a great learning opportunity for everyone.

How to Help Students in Haiti

You can provide children in Terre Blanche with an education by helping to pay for books, uniforms, lunches and teacher salaries. Donations can be made online.

Encouraging Mothers in Haiti

A mother comes to the Clinic of Hope to get help for her child.

This is the time of year when we celebrate mothers. Haiti Foundation of Hope has a number of ongoing programs that can provide encouragement to mothers living in rural northern Haiti, a place where a mother’s struggle can sometimes be providing food for her children.

Please consider supporting those living in Haiti with a donation to one of the programs below or use our Gift Catalog to purchase a Mother’s Day gift:

Women’s Trade School — The women’s trade school is a three-year program that offers women an opportunity to learn skills such as sewing, cooking, childhood development, nutrition, health and etiquette.

Community Health The community health program is mobilizing, training, and supporting local volunteers to reduce deaths from childhood diarrhea, maternal complications and malnutrition.

Beans and Rice In a country where many people struggle to have enough to eat, a gift of beans and rice can make all the difference. The food is distributed to individuals and families most in need.

School Give a mother the peace of mind that her children are gaining an education and receiving a school lunch each day. The school in Terre Blanche has 820 pre-kingergarten, primary and secondary students and a staff of caring teachers and administrators.

Medical Clinic — Earlier this year, we celebrated the four-year anniversary of the opening of the Clinic of Hope. While the battle against illness, disease and malnutrition continues, we are grateful that the clinic is there to provide year-round health care. We are also thankful that its services have expanded to include programs such as community health and the distribution of Medika Mamba, a fortified peanut butter for children suffering from malnutrition.
