Continuing our series of stories highlighting the impact of the Solar Power Project, HFH board member Donn Raymond shares one of the ways the project has benefitted the School in Terre Blanche.

Computer Lab Comes to Terre Blanche Schools

The expansion of the solar power program in Terre Blanche not only increased the amount of electricity available for the Clinic of Hope, but also opened the door to providing electricity to the School of Terre Blanche. This was a first for the school!

As HFH worked with Brighten Haiti on the solar project, we were introduced to another nonprofit organization, Bethel Computers for Education. Following a short interview and a subsequent Zoom meeting with its founder, Denny Baumann, we didn’t have to wait long for great news.

Hoping to receive six computers for the school, the School of Terre Blanche was instead gifted 23 laptops, along with a 24th computer that would serve as the main server. The computers came pre-installed with educational programs covering a variety of subjects, including language skills in Haitian Creole, English and French, as well as mathematics, science and religion.

The donation also included training for teachers and several community members on how to best utilize the programs and incorporate them into the school’s curriculum.

And so, on a sunny day—September 3, 2026—the School of Terre Blanche opened its doors to a brand-new computer lab. It was a true gift to the students and a true gift to the community.

Bethel Computers for Education has developed a computer device which is called Internet In A Box (IIAB). One version of this modified laptop computer is used in schools which either have NO INTERNET available to them, or simply can’t afford to use it if it is available. It contains all of Wikipedia in English, French, Spanish and Creole plus over 2,000 books and an off-line educational resource called Kolibri. Kolibri has an extensive selection of lectures in Math, Science, Technology, Arts, History etc. and runs in English, French or Spanish.
