Faces of Hope

March 2013 newsletter:

Luvince

Luvince came to the Clinic of Hope suffering from severe malnutrition. It was the result of accidentally ingesting lye, causing his throat to narrow and making it difficult to swallow. The clinic staff confirmed the diagnosis with the help of a Haitian gastroenterologist, who arranged to have two Haitian surgeons perform surgery to correct the problem – at no expense. Luvince made a full recovery.

Luvince is just one of the many Haitians who receive care from the staff at the Clinic of Hope in Terre Blanche. The clinic is supported by Haiti Foundation of Hope. Several volunteer medical teams travel to the clinic each year but the clinic is open year-round and staffed by Haitians, who assist patients like Luvince every day.

Daniel was a three-year-old patient with severe symptomatic sickle cell disease who came to the clinic at the end of last year. With the assistance of a pediatrician from Yakima, Washington, Daniel’s condition can be managed with resources available at the clinic.

Last summer, five-year-old Joel came to the clinic and was subsequently diagnosed with severe congenital heart disease. He needed surgery. Pastor Delamy, a partner with Haiti Foundation of Hope, found a Haitian cardiologist to evaluate Joel. The cardiologist, at his own expense, arranged to have Joel travel to France for surgery. The surgery was a success and Joel spent his recovery in France.

October Team Report

Clinic workers distribute food.

Our October team is back home after a busy 10 days in Haiti. Here are some highlights from their time working at the Clinic of Hope in Terre Blanche:

A final note from the team leaders: As usual, God blessed us with a very capable, hard-working medical team. The rapid development of partnership between the Haitians and the team, within a short period of 10 days, is truly a miracle that can only be appreciated when observed on site. The testimonials from both Haitians and Americans confirm how effectively this relationship has been in the past as well as during this October 2012. And yet, there is much that needs to be done. Although Sandy produced only minimal damage to the school and clinic compound, we need much help to deal with the major recurring problem of poor crops, drought, chronic hunger and starvation. Please pray for the Haiti Foundation of Hope board as it seeks solutions.

Haitian and American team members.

Teams to Haiti

A volunteer medical team will travel later this month to Terre Blanche to work alongside Haitian workers at the Clinic of Hope. Teams in February and March saw over 2,000 patients, performed more than 50 minor surgeries, observed and managed eight newborn deliveries, and distributed beans and rice to every patient, with an extra amount of food for the poorest.

June 2011 Newsletter

June Newsletter

Earlier this year, Haiti Foundation of Hope sponsored the first medical conference held at the Clinic of Hope and it was a huge success. There were about 40 participants, mostly young nurses and doctors (some are pictured here). The speaker was an obstetrician/gynecologist from the United States. Everyone who completed the one-day training received a certificate.

Encouraging Mothers in Haiti

A mother comes to the Clinic of Hope to get help for her child.

This is the time of year when we celebrate mothers. Haiti Foundation of Hope has a number of ongoing programs that can provide encouragement to mothers living in rural northern Haiti, a place where a mother’s struggle can sometimes be providing food for her children.

Please consider supporting those living in Haiti with a donation to one of the programs below or use our Gift Catalog to purchase a Mother’s Day gift:

Women’s Trade School — The women’s trade school is a three-year program that offers women an opportunity to learn skills such as sewing, cooking, childhood development, nutrition, health and etiquette.

Community Health The community health program is mobilizing, training, and supporting local volunteers to reduce deaths from childhood diarrhea, maternal complications and malnutrition.

Beans and Rice In a country where many people struggle to have enough to eat, a gift of beans and rice can make all the difference. The food is distributed to individuals and families most in need.

School Give a mother the peace of mind that her children are gaining an education and receiving a school lunch each day. The school in Terre Blanche has 820 pre-kingergarten, primary and secondary students and a staff of caring teachers and administrators.

Medical Clinic — Earlier this year, we celebrated the four-year anniversary of the opening of the Clinic of Hope. While the battle against illness, disease and malnutrition continues, we are grateful that the clinic is there to provide year-round health care. We are also thankful that its services have expanded to include programs such as community health and the distribution of Medika Mamba, a fortified peanut butter for children suffering from malnutrition.

Four years after the Clinic of Hope opened its doors in northern Haiti, construction is under way on an addition (read more about the project). Here are some of the latest photos of the addition as it goes up adjacent to the existing clinic building.

Expanding the Clinic

(March 2011 newsletter)

We are excited about the latest project unfolding in Terre Blanche, Haiti: the construction of an addition to the Clinic of Hope.

The construction is being done by Haitian workers. It’s not yet complete but it is already being used to hold meetings for community health activities.

The Clinic of Hope opened its doors in February 2007, providing consistent health care in the community for the first time. Today, the clinic is staffed year-round by Haitian medical personnel and hosts visiting medical teams from the United States.

In the months after the earthquake in January 2010, the clinic saw a surge in patients. Sicker and more complicated cases were being seen, and some patients needed to be observed overnight or longer.

The situation placed a new burden on the services provided in Terre Blanche, which prompted discussions about expansion. These discussions also pointed to the need for dedicated and specialized maternal health services and for an office space for the community health program.

In order to accomplish a comprehensive infrastructure and programmatic response to these needs, Haiti Foundation of Hope was awarded a generous grant by Medical Teams International to cover part of the cost of the health facility expansion.

Once completed, the additional space will provide a place to keep patients overnight rather than placing them in makeshift or temporary locations.

The new space will also allow for more room for minor surgeries, newborn deliveries, a community health office, and an overnight observation unit for recovering patients and those needing referral to other medical facilities.

We’re excited about seeing the completion of the clinic addition and the extra space that it will provide as we continue to serve the people in Terre Blanche.

If you would like to support the ongoing work at the Clinic of Hope or the community health program in the area, please donate online.

Building the Clinic of Hope Annex

During this season of thanksgiving, we are grateful to be part of another project unfolding in Terre Blanche, Haiti: the construction of an addition to the Clinic of Hope.

Currently, the foundation is being built, with all the construction being done by Haitian workers.

The clinic first opened its doors in February 2007, providing consistent health care in the community for the first time. Today, the clinic is staffed year-round by Haitian medical personnel and hosts visiting medical teams from the United States.

After the earthquake in January, we realized we were seeing sicker and more complicated cases at the Clinic of Hope. Some patients needed to be observed overnight or longer.

Haiti Foundation of Hope recently broke ground on an addition to the clinic building. Once completed, the space will provide a place to keep patients overnight rather than placing them in makeshift or temporary locations. During the recent cholera outbreak, some patients were being treated in the church across the street from the clinic.

The new space will also allow for more room for minor surgeries, newborn deliveries, a community health office, and a resting place before critical patients are transported to other medical facilities.

We’re excited about seeing the completion of the clinic addition and the extra space that it will provide as we continue to serve the people in Terre Blanche.
