These women are smiling because they are part of a program, supported by Haiti Foundation of Hope, which provides monthly nutrition to pregnant women.
The monthly food bags contain: rice, corn meal, black beans, oil and powdered milk. These supplements add about 500 extra calories per day to help prevent mother and newborn complications during the last two trimesters of pregnancy.
Providing these women with extra food resources brings hope for their futures. The UN World Food Programme’s report that hunger in Haiti has reached a historic high with one-in-two Haitians now in acute hunger shows the need.
Community Health Volunteers and Markee Maternity Center staff selected 21 pregnant women to participate in this program. They are expected to be faithful with follow-up appointments until delivery. In addition, these 21 women are each tasked with encouraging and educating two other pregnant women about the importance of prenatal care – spreading the word about the importance of prenatal care and the resources at the Markee Maternity Center.
Pastor Delamy says HFH’s support for this program is “manna from heaven.” The board of Haiti Foundation of Hope is grateful to all partners who have made this possible.
