Eleven years ago an event forever changed the lives and memories of the Haitian people. An earthquake registering 7.0 in magnitude leveled buildings, homes, churches and schools leaving an estimated 250,000 dead, 300,000 injured, 5 million displaced and 1.5 million people moved to makeshift camps.
Eleven years later some things remain the same and much has changed. In Terre Blanche, northern Haiti, the lives of families reflect a resilience to the hardships since the disaster: Primary and secondary schools continue to meet; the Clinic of Hope operates year-round with Haitian staff; and Community Health volunteers visit villages and homes to bring care to those in need.
Today, we stand with Haiti in remembering the lives lost or forever changed as a result of the January 12, 2010 earthquake. We stand with Haiti as we look toward a bright future.
